Top things to check when test driving a used car

When it comes to purchasing a used car, there are some factors that must be taken into account. While everyone has the ideal preference in mind, it is vital that when you buy a vehicle, you are sure that it is the right model for you.

Although all aspects of buying a car are important, arguably the most important step is the test drive. As such, we have analysed some of the most crucial aspects of what to look out for when first driving a vehicle.

1- Check the engine

When viewing a car, it can be easy to get distracted by the features and extra luxuries that may be in the model. However, it is also vital that what is on the inside is analysed. Checking the engine is crucial and starting the motor 'from cold' can allow you to get a feel for the vehicle when it first revs into life.

2- Look inside and out

There is a good chance that if you are looking at test driving a car, then you will have given the exterior a thorough checking. However, your test drive can be one of the first times you, the driver, are sitting in what could be your new car. As such, not only should you use your test drive to analyse how the vehicle performs on the road, but you should also look at the overall interior.

3- Steering, brakes and overall performance

When on a test drive you should remember to make sure the steering is even, and the brakes are in good working condition. The car should remain in-line and not veer to one side when on a level road, so if possible test that this is the case. If you think you feel rubbing noises or excess friction when using the brakes, there could be an issue. Testing the handbrake can be difficult. If possible, try and test a section of the road with a slight incline to check the vehicle during a hill start.
