The remarkable 1928 Ford Model A
Every now and again, we have something really special come through the doors at Thompson and Smith. Even though we have sold and always have a nice collection on display of classic cars in Lincolnshire over the years, this particular 1928 Ford Model A is quite something.
Ford’s successor to the world famous Model T had a tough act to follow. However, the Model A ended up being a huge success, as Ford sold around one million models just over a year after its initial launch in 1927. With four standard colours and nine body styles available, customers had more choice than you might have previously thought. Upon its release, prices started at $385 for a roadster, but the top-of-the-range Town Car cost $1400.
The stunning 1928 Ford Model A we currently have in stock at Thompson and Smith features a water-cooled L-head 4-cylinder engine, which produces 40hp and is apparently capable of reaching a top speed of 65mph - although it is probably better suited to leisurely and graceful drives.
It also has a conventional 3-speed sliding gear unsynchronised manual transmission with a single speed reverse, as well as 4-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Despite approaching 90 years old, these are remarkably advanced features.
What’s more, the Model A was the first Ford to use the standard set of driver controls, including conventional clutch, brake, and accelerator pedals along with a gear stick. Seeing as this vehicle delivers commendable performance and is remarkably easy to drive, you might be tempted to use it as an everyday runabout!
Although Thompson and Smith sell a wide variety of used cars in Lincolnshire, this particular model has got us very excited, it is fully restored and in perfect condition both mechanically and cosmetically with the underside as impressive as the rest of the car.
