Summer time is upon us, and there’s no better feeling than getting the roof down on a convertible and heading for a drive in the sunshine. Unfortunately if you’re rocking a bulky people carrier, you’re not going to get the same level of enjoyment out of your country driving, so now might be a great time to consider getting a nice little runaround for the summer. With that in mind, we’ve put together four tips to help you get the perfect used car this season.

    1) Determine your budget

If you’re not purchasing outright, you should aim for a vehicle that will cost no more than a quarter of your monthly income. This way, you should be able to comfortably afford the payments.

    2) Consider how powerful a vehicle you need

Smaller cars are generally cheaper to run, so if you aren’t taking the family in tow on your summer drives, a small vehicle might be the more economical option. Likewise, if you’re planning on driving down narrow country roads as opposed to motorways, you’re probably not going to need a powerful cruiser.

    3) Narrow down your wanted list

Before hitting the forecourt, you should do a little bit of research as to what sort of summer car you want – for example, is colour important? Do you want a convertible or will a large sunroof suffice? Try to narrow down your options before you go to look in person. Most reputable dealerships will have their current stock list of quality used cars online which makes things easier.

    4) Take your time with the test-drive

After you’ve decided upon what model you want, don’t be afraid to put it under scrutiny during the test drive. Make adjustments to the seats, get yourself comfortable and play with every control at your disposal. Take a look at the boot space – is there enough room to fit your golf clubs in, for example? Be certain to put it through its paces.
